Camp Lohikan had its beginning in 1957 when Mike and Arline Buynak purchased a 68-acre campsite in Lake Como, Pennsylvania. Mike and Arline opened the camp for girls and boys and over the years expanded the facility into the 1200 acre, state of the art, summer camp known as Camp Lohikan.
In 1983, Mike and Arline's son, Mark, assumed the full-time directorship of Camp Lohikan. Mark’s camp experience began as a camper at the age of 5 and over the years included most of the camp's counselling and supervisory positions. First-hand knowledge of camper life means a lot and it's evident in the selection of our child-centered, fun-loving counselors and caring supervisors, the design of the daily program, the range of activity choices and even the little, but important, things like how we celebrate camper birthdays and tooth fairy visits!
Mark is assisted in the operation of Camp Lohikan with a talented group of camp professionals, who hold key areas of responsibility in camp, and are pictured below. As a group, these individuals have more than 200 years of camp management experience!
In addition to our camp managers/assistant directors, we have senior staff members heading up each of our program areas and camper divisions. These senior staff members are typically teachers or coaches during the school year, and most are parents with children enrolled in the camp during the summer. Our total senior staff numbers on average 60 adults each summer.
If there is one common element that is shared by all of our staff members, it’s the belief in the power of the camp experience. All of us are dedicated to providing a safe camp environment and a fun camp experience, from which children will return home with new friends, new skills, increased self-esteem and greater independence. We believe that no other experience compares to camp in accomplishing these goals. Let us prove it. Join us for our 68th summer!
